The Active programme is all about driving organisations to make improvements for the benefit of their local community

The ISPAL Active Health and Physical Activity Recognition Programme Documentary Film

In November 2009 a film featuring case studies for West Lothian Leisure and DC Leisure Management Ltd was created to demonstrate the impact that the Active programme has had on the two organisations and the communities they serve.

These are in two parts:

The ISPAL Health & Physical Activity Recognition Programme - Part 1

The ISPAL Health & Physical Activity Recognition Programme - Part 2

Here are a few more examples of the positive impact it has had on those that have been through the process:

"The ISPAL Active assessment has been an interesting and challenging process for our team.  Whilst highlighting the many good practices the Council have in place, it also gave us the opportunity to look at the gaps in provision and take steps to improve these.  The assessment has been a positive and encouraging experience, confirming we are well on track with our vision of making Edinburgh the most active city in Europe by 2020."

Sports Officer

Edinburgh City Council

"We were able to get the whole team involved in highlighting the work carried out under each of the key statements and it was great to see how much we are currently delivering in relation to physical activity and health improvement across all ages. We also found some areas where improvements could be made and are now looking forward to identifying ways in which we can implement these improvements to enhance the services we deliver to those living across East Ayrshire.  The whole process was a great experience."

Community Health Development Manager

East Ayrshire Council

"The ISPAL Active Assessment has been a very beneficial and worthwhile process. It has helped highlight some very good practice in a number of areas across the business that we provide here at South Lanarkshire Leisure. Completing the assessment has shown us the importance of developing our strong partnerships we have established in our area. Building on our strong partnerships will help in our objective to improve the physical activity, health and well being of our communities."

Sports Development Officer

South Lanarkshire Leisure

"The process of developing areas for improvement made us think long and hard about what we could do to make the services we provide even better. Active shows the depth of an organisation. Do it as it is a really positive thing to do, it lets you see a way forward and gives encouragement and provides a process to give an internal and external critique of the service and helps you find better ways of doing what you do”

Health and Fitness Manager

West Lothian Leisure

"Moray Council Sports Development section, which incorporates health and physical activity, felt the process of going through the ISPAL Active Assessment was highly valuable.  It was excellent to have an independent person assessing our section and reporting back on our strengths and areas of improvement.  The section is now in a position to work on the areas that require improvement which has given us a real focus.  The report produced was also circulated to all local elected members and heads of service to inform them of developments in this section which was very beneficial."

Sports Development Officer

Moray Council

“The ISPAL Active assessment has been a tremendous experience and has really helped DC Leisure to focus our attention on where we can improve our approaches to developing health and increasing physical activity participation for the communities we serve. As a company we are very committed to doing this as it supports our vision and values and this was recognised by the Assessor during the assessment. The assessment was thorough, but not onerous and we felt it added value by providing us with new ideas and approaches to developing our activity programme for the benefit of our customers and our staff.”

Director of Sports Development

DC Leisure Management Ltd

"The ISPAL Active Assessment gave us the opportunity to examine and re-evaluate our work. It motivated the Steering Group to work on areas for improvement as well as highlighting the valuable work we did well. The process was challenging, but very rewarding. The Assessment re-affirmed the strength of co-operation between South Lanarkshire Leisure and NHS Lanarkshire in health improvement work.

It is good to know we are making a difference, helping people become more active and healthier, and we are now more confident about publicising this too."
